There is a Tesco supermarket within 20 yards of the apartment. All transport links are within a few minutes walk. The apartment is very close to Queen St station and to George Square. George Sq can be seen nearby. The apartment is situated in the heart of the Merchant City which is rich in wonderful architecture. All sorts of events take place happen in George Square! Often you will find a free pop concert or even a tea dance. On Dec 30th 2008 Glasgow beat the record for the largest outdoor tea dance with 223 couples dancing the afternoon away to a swing band! The Barras market is within an easy 10 minute stroll from the apartment. The market is famous for Glaswegian patter and humour. Cross the road from the Barras and you can enter the famous Glasgow Green. Here you will find the Peoples Palace & Winter Gardens The Wintergardens - a lovely place to enjoy a traditional Scottish breakfast from the cafe inside! Inside the Winter Gardens you will find many tropical fauna. The Victorian glasshouse has a cafe and is a welcome visit whatever the weather. The Peoples Palace is adjoined to the Winter Gardens. It is a museum of social culture and a great venue to bathe in nostalgia for exiled Glaswegians!. The Doulton Fountain is the largest terracotta fountain in the world, as well as the best surviving example of its kind. The fountain was restored in 2003 and relocated to the front of the People's Palace.
Next to peoples Palace is the Templeton Carpet factory. Now a business centre and home to the West Brewery (you can visit the brewery which has a bar & restaurant), the factory was modelled after the Doge's Palace in Venice. In the late 19th century, the owners of the site wanted to build a factory there but the Victorian city council kept rejecting their design proposals. So they recruited a top architect, William Leiper. He came up with a proposal modelled on the Doge's Palace in Venice which the Council were delighted with!
From the Winter Gardens you can walk a few hundred yards down to the River Clyde and walk along the walkway back to the city centre. The suspension bridge over the Clyde. From there its across the road into St Enoch Square and back to the shops! So ending an easy cicular walk from the apartment to tthe Barras and through Glasgow Green and along the river back to the apartment. The newest suspension bridge over the Clyde. Its called the Clyde Arc and provides road and pedestrians access to the new BBC headquarters. The bridge is also called the Squinty Bridge as it spans the Clyde at an angle. There are many easy one day tours including Loch Lomond available. Loch Lomond is less than an hour away by public transport or car. The train stations and subway stations are within 2 minues walk.
